Movies to Stream This October

Movies worth streaming this October run from a Guillermo del Toro debut on HBO Max to a Netflix shelf stacked with Psycho, The Sixth Sense and Heat. Three outlets have flagged picks across HBO Max, Hulu and Netflix, and horror runs through most of them.

The reports are dated October 4 and 5, 2026, so this rundown reflects what they said at that point.

Cronos and Ugetsu Lead the Quiet Horror Picks on HBO Max

ComicBook.com reports on four lesser-known horror movies on HBO Max. The list includes a del Toro feature, a Japanese ghost story, a horror anthology and a cult classic known for its famous poster.

The del Toro entry is Cronos (1992), his feature debut. The Mexican independent dark fantasy horror film is about seeking immortality and includes an early role for Ron Perlman. ComicBook.com says it belongs to the Criterion Collection and streams on HBO Max.

The Japanese pick is Ugetsu, a 1953 fantasy horror film from director Kenji Mizoguchi. It follows a potter who leaves his family during a civil war and is seduced by a spirit. The text available for this article cuts off before the full entry and the other two picks, so those are not covered here.

Barbarian, Nightmare Alley and The Substance Land on Hulu

TheWrap's Hulu picks for October 4 through 10 are Barbarian (2022), Nightmare Alley (2021) and The Substance (2024). The outlet describes all three as new to Hulu in October.

Barbarian comes from writer-director Zach Cregger and stars Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård. It is a horror comedy about a double-booked Airbnb that hides a dangerous secret. Consider it a warning for anyone who checks in without reading the reviews.

Nightmare Alley is the week's del Toro link. TheWrap calls the Bradley Cooper noir his "most underrated directorial effort," and notes it arrived four years after The Shape of Water won Best Picture and Best Director. Together with Cronos on HBO Max, it makes a two-service del Toro double feature.

The Substance, from writer-director Coralie Fargeat, stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. TheWrap describes it as a body horror comedy set in contemporary Los Angeles. The text available cuts off partway through that entry.

Viewers who want something louder after the horror can browse these martial arts movies on Hulu or movies like Fast and Furious on Hulu.

Netflix Opens October With Psycho and Saves Heat for Mid-Month

An IBTimes Australia roundup lists ten films that arrived on Netflix in October 2026. Eight carry an Oct. 1 date: Psycho, The Sixth Sense, The Prestige, The Menu, Call Me by Your Name, Moonlight, The Bourne Identity and Ad Astra.

That is a wide spread, from a classic shocker to a twisty magic drama and a comic restaurant thriller. It also includes two acclaimed dramas.

The mid-month title is Heat, Michael Mann's 1995 film, dated Oct. 16. IBTimes says it is the one critics and roundups flagged for the middle of the month. The roundup's text cuts off at Heat, so the tenth title and its date are not shown here.

Anyone who finishes The Bourne Identity and wants more spy action can try these movies like Kingsman.

What to Check Before Hitting Play

None of the three reports says which countries its availability applies to. That matters, because a title listed in one roundup may not appear in a viewer's own library.

Important Note: IBTimes cautions that Netflix dates can change and availability varies by country: "Schedules slip, and libraries differ by country." Check the service's own listing before planning a movie night around any date here.

Next on the calendar is Heat on Oct. 16, while the Hulu picks cover the week ending October 10. The HBO Max titles have no stated end date in the text available.
